Quick Travel Tips
Short, practical advice for wherever you're headed next
Search 330 days out
Award seats open about 330 days before departure. Set a reminder and book the morning space appears — the best cabins go first.
Never transfer blind
Confirm award space exists before moving points to an airline. Transfers are one-way and usually can't be reversed.
Wait for transfer bonuses
Banks regularly run 20–30% transfer bonuses. Keep points flexible and move them only when a bonus lines up with real space.
Compare cash and points
Price the same seat both ways. Below about 1.5¢ per point, paying cash and saving the miles is usually the better deal.
Build in a long layover
Three hours between flights buys a meal and a shower in a lounge — often the best part of the trip for no extra cost.
Check lounge access first
Priority Pass, credit cards and status each open different doors. Check the terminal map before security, not after.
Screenshot your booking
Save the confirmation and boarding passes offline before you fly. Airport Wi-Fi drops exactly when you need the code.
Skip the foreign transaction fee
Always pay abroad with a card that charges no foreign transaction fee, and decline the machine's own currency conversion.
Book the flight first
Lock in the award flight, then plan hotels and activities around it. Award space is the scarce part, not the hotel room.
Japan opens 355 days out
ANA and JAL business seats appear almost a year ahead. Set the alert early — Tokyo in spring disappears in minutes, not weeks.
Build the trip around a stopover
Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo all allow a free or cheap stopover on award tickets. Two cities for one set of miles.
Watch UK departure tax
Air Passenger Duty on premium cabins leaving the UK is steep. Start in Dublin, Paris or Amsterdam and the same seat costs far less.
Pay cash for short hops
Flights inside Europe are cheap in cash and poor value on points. Save the miles for the long-haul cabin instead.
Price domestic awards both ways
US domestic flights often cost fewer miles through a partner program than on the airline's own site. Check both before booking.
Turn a Doha layover into a stopover
Qatar Airways offers discounted stopover hotels, and the museum and souq are minutes from the airport.
